Hatch 2017 Innovation Conference



Hatch 2017 brings over 6 speakers, 30 startups, and 3 workshops to the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus for a day of entrepreneurial education, networking, and celebration. Hatch is entirely free & open to the community. 


Our Speaker Symposium features some of Baltimore's biggest entrepreneurs and business leaders from around the nation. The Startup Showcase lets Baltimore and MidAtlantic companies showcase the game-changing products they have been working on, allowing attendees to network directly with the teams. Our BLUE workshop series consists of three, 30-minute breakout sessions focused on various facets of founding startups. 

 

Come for the speakers and startups, stay for the free food and swag, networking opportunities, and celebration of the people and companies driving Baltimore forward.

Founder, See Jane Invest

Kelly is an angel investor, venture capitalist, and international speaker A Carey alumna, Kelly is a fierce supporter of women entrepreneurs, with her VC firm investing exclusively in female-founded startups.

CEO, Innovation Village District

Rich is the Chairman of Innovation Village, the first innovation district revitalizing West Baltimore through entrepreneurship and economic inclusion. In a past life, Rich was a Senior Manager with Deloitte and an executive producer in Hollywood.

Troy 

Founder, 410 Labs 

Dave is a serial entrepreneur, software developer, community builder, and investor. A Homewood Computer Science alum, Dave focuses on building innovative solutions right here in Baltimore.  

Carmen

Daniels Jones

Founder, Solutions Marketing Group

Carmen is the founder of Solutions Marketing Group, a consulting agency targeting people with disabilities, which she was inspired to start after a car accident left her paralyzed during her junior year of college. 

Ben

Hwang 

CEO, Profusa 

Dr. Ben Hwang is the CEO of Profusa, a company that is creating the next generation of biointegrated sensors. Ben has both a MS and a Ph.D in Biology from the Johns Hopkins University. 

Paul

Grossinger

Founder, Gaingels

Paul is a twenty-seven year old entrepreneur, angel investor, and syndicator. After graduating from Johns Hopkins, Paul went on to found Gaingels, an investment network exclusively backing LGBT founders.

Startup Showcase

The Startup Showcase allows attendees to network with the startups who are driving innovation in Baltimore and beyond. With over 30 companies attending, the Startup Showcase is a time to network over great food, discuss ideas, and maybe even land yourself an internship.

 

BLUE Workshops

Our BLUE (Building Leaders and Undergraduate Entrepreneurs) Workshops, led by industry professionals, teach attendees about the various facets of entrepreneurship, from forming initial teams to raising venture capital. All workshops are free and open to the public.

Pitch Across Maryland 

 

Hatch 2017 is the first stop of Startup Maryland's Pitch Across Maryland bus tour. Early stage founders get the chance to pitch their ideas to the video studio in the back of the bus, and are entered into the Startup Maryland Pitch competition. Catch the bus at Hatch 2017!

Come by the Contrary Capital booth, write a summary of your venture idea, and drop it in the raffle jar. The Student Partners from Contrary Capital will evaluate the submissions, award $100 to the best idea, and work with the founders to get their startup off the ground.

The Legal Side

of Startups 

Led by Jacob Byrne

Coming up with an idea, finding a team, and getting a startup off the ground is hard enough. Yet entrepreneurs also have to deal with questions about incorporation, intellectual property, and raising venture capital.


But no worries: this workshop will help entrepreneurs navigate the complicated legal framework that surrounds startup companies.

Thankfully, there are tried and true ways to create a company culture that motivates employess, creates an enjoyable work environment, and puts teams on the road to lasting success.


Led by Chris Steer, a serial entrepreneur, attorney, the Managing Director of entreQuest, and a JHU alumnus who is committed to the growth of Baltimore's and Hopkins' innovation ecosystems.

Angel Academy

Led by Startup Maryland

Startup Maryland's Angel Academy initiative is a series of workshops designed to introduce angel investing and introduce prospective investors to the practive. 


A component of the Startup Maryland Curation and Capital initiatives, the Angel Academy provides aspiring angels investors best practices and methodologies to begin or refine their investing knowledge, skills, and resources.


Workshop sessions give attendees an insider look at the world of startup investing, as well as, activity in their own region.  Attendees are also given the chance to meet other angel investors and curated startup ventures, expanding their network.
